How doorknobs are made
The making of each set of doorknobs is very much a hands on process - totally devoid of any help from the ubiquitous micro-chip. Its all bound up in the magic of flying woodchips and sawdust. A process unchanged for centuries.
The Standard Range - Atholl, Birnam, Caledonia and Dunsinane, are turned on a solid , heavy lathe using one piece tooling. They are made from beech - a plentiful, hard and tight grained hardwood that turns well and gives a good finish.
The Bespoke and Button Ranges are hand turned on a specially built lathe. Here a variety of differently shaped chisels and calloused hands are the method of production. These knobs are made from a selection of timbers including beech, oak and rosewood. Or any other hardwood that the customer wishes.
